ONE HUNDRED BOOKS

June 1st we started our ONE HUNDRED BOOKS challenge.  I posted a chart and as books were finished I filled each square with a book title and the reader's name.  It didn't take them long to cover a LOT of territory!  [At the beginning I was counting some books (like Magic Tree House) as 1/2 a book since they are smaller but I quickly saw the folly of my ways and realized that got to be a slippery slope... so we just counted any chapter book as a book.]

They finished up early last week and we waited til Daddy was in town for our big prize!

Dinner at a teppanyaki restaurant - big kids only!

They had never been to this kind of restaurant and it was a real treat.  The chef was friendly.  He doesn't do a 'show' or engage his audience in any way, but he is fascinating to watch and cooks up super yummy stuff!

Happy readers, happy Mommy.

This summer reading challenge was definitely made possible by the international school library which was open to the public for four Wednesdays in June.  On the last week we took home 27 books!  The kids are all entertained by similar reading material, so there was lots of sharing of books.  (Mostly they read copious amounts of Boxcar Children!)

We finished up those books (but can't return them til the library opens for the school year!) and now the kids are VERY into the online lending library available in Wake County.  We have one old iPhone, an iPad, and then my and Matt's iPhones that all work as e-readers.  Reading off screens is not my favorite but it seems like this will be a big part of our future!

Jonah and I started our first Boxcar Children book this week and we are both loving it! I loved them as a kid and asked my mom to bring a few. It's been fun to start reading them with him and fun to know your kids like them, too! Way to go, kids!

Amazing accomplishments, Bigs! What a wonderful way to spend part of your summer. Your Mom and Uncle Stephen were regulars at the Wake library too - glad you're able to check out books online!
