big first days

Monday August 17th.

First day of home school.  First day of local preschool.

Summer is starting to feel.... over.  Sigh.  We have two more weeks before local elementary school starts so plenty of free time and we are still hoping for a few more dips in the pool. But bedtime got cranked a bit earlier and mornings are no longer just for lazing - yep, school days again.

Sunday afternoon the big three and I celebrated Back to School Bash.  This is basically my "just about everything can be an excuse to celebrate" fancy name for passing out new school materials.  I guess it's the home school equivalent of shopping for school supplies?!?!

It is exciting to receive crisp new books - some familiar looking (we are starting our fourth year in the same math curriculum) and others very very new.  Mostly the kids enjoy writing their names on everything - and the name writing gets quite involved; sparkle pens, colored sharpies, the works.  Lydia even used some birthday stickers to spice up one of her notebooks!

Then this morning it was go-time :)  So thankful Matt got to take the boys - they do much better when he drops them off, and I wanted that extra boost for their first day.

It was (and still is!) pouring rain.  Good excuses to pull out rain gear, and Matt's already in his biking rain jacket - it is NOT easy to stay dry on a bike in the rain!

The boys did exactly as we expected.  John Paul is a "going to preschool rockstar".  Luke is less enthused with the actual transition from Daddy's (or Mommy's) care to his teacher, but they assure me it takes him less than a minute to find his footing and he does great.  He certainly seems happy at pick up, as does big brother.

Back at home, busy busy busy :)

Ha!  Actually, we aren't too busy for these first few weeks.  We will enjoy a slower pace here at the beginning and slowly get up to full speed.  Isaac is out on the school porch too, but by the time I remembered to take a photo he was long gone!  [Notice I got new lighting installed out here!  Last year we endured a single bulb dome light and I was so glad to purchase some track lighting and the apartment management work team installed it for us.]

Then later in the afternoon, it was time to make a banner.  We have a house guest coming to live with us until the end of September and we are thrilled!  Anna is the little sister of a friend we've known for years, she's taking a semester away from college and choosing to spend some of her time with us!  what a blessing!  She arrives Tuesday night.

We've got the banner hung on her door and are excited to greet her tomorrow!

Thanks so much for welcoming our precious Anna! We are so excited that she gets to spend this time with your sweet family! I trust she's arrived safe and sound, albeit exhausted, I'm sure. Your sweet kiddos were so kind to make a poster for her! She will love spending time with them and with you all. We're praying she'll be a huge blessing to you.
As for back-to-school, I lived that for 25 years of homeschooling. I love your school porch! So cute! Now that I'm done, I miss it and the adrenaline rush I'd get pulling out new curriculum and supplies. Unfortunately, the newness usually quickly wore off each year and the daily grind would set in but what a blessing it was to spend those days with my children. I cherish each moment I spent with them and know that you will too. They grow up so fast and the house becomes so quiet. Finally getting to go to the bathroom alone without interruption, clean and ordered rooms, peace and quiet - it's not all that it's cracked up to be! Enjoy the "chaos" and the constant "juggling" that mamas have to do and even the exhaustion that comes with the long days and short years. It means there are little people that need your love and attention nearly 24/7 and you're working hard to grow them and strengthen them, feed them and comfort them. And then one day, they just might be flying far, far away to go serve another young family so that young mama can get a little bit of rest! :)
